Vaginal Discharge: What's Normal, What's Not and When You Should Be Concerned?
Michel KWARTENGLet's talk about something almost every woman experiences but not enough of us were properly taught about.
Vaginal discharge.
You've probably noticed it on your underwear, wondered whether the colour was normal, or found yourself searching Google because something looked a little different.
And with so much conflicting information online, it's easy to assume that any change means something is wrong.
But here's what you should know: vaginal discharge is normal, and it doesn't have to look the same every day.
First, what exactly is vaginal discharge?

Vaginal discharge is a combination of fluid, mucus and cells produced by the vagina and cervix.
It helps keep the vagina lubricated and supports its natural protective environment.
Healthy discharge is usually clear, white or off-white. It may be watery, stretchy, creamy or slightly sticky.
And depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, you might notice more or less of it.
Why does your discharge change throughout your menstrual cycle?
Your hormones influence the amount and consistency of cervical mucus.
For example:
- Before ovulation: You may notice an increase in discharge as your body approaches its fertile window.
- Around ovulation: Discharge often becomes clear, slippery and stretchy, similar to raw egg white.
- After ovulation: It may become thicker, creamier or less noticeable.
- Before your period: Some women notice changes in the amount or texture of their discharge.
These patterns vary from person to person. The important thing is learning what's usual for your body.
What do different discharge colours mean?

Clear or white discharge
This is often normal, especially when there's no itching, burning or unusual odour.
Creamy or milky discharge
This can also be normal, depending on your menstrual cycle.
Yellow or green discharge
A distinctly yellow or green colour, especially alongside an unpleasant smell, irritation or pain, may indicate an infection and should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Grey discharge
Greyish discharge, particularly with a noticeable fishy odour, can be associated with bacterial vaginosis. However, testing may be needed to confirm the cause.
Pink or brown discharge
This can sometimes happen when a small amount of blood mixes with vaginal discharge, such as around menstruation. If it occurs unexpectedly, repeatedly or alongside other symptoms, seek medical advice.
Remember, colour alone cannot tell you exactly what's happening.
When should you be concerned?

Changes in discharge deserve attention when they're accompanied by symptoms such as:
- A strong or unusual odour
- Persistent itching or irritation
- Burning when urinating
- Pain during sex
- Pelvic pain or fever
- Unexpected vaginal bleeding
- Symptoms that keep returning
These symptoms may have different causes, including infections that require different treatments.
That's why self-diagnosing based on social media advice isn't always a good idea.
Does normal discharge need treatment?
No.
Normal vaginal discharge doesn't require medication, vaginal cleansing products or special treatments.
Your vagina has its own natural processes for maintaining a healthy environment.
Avoid douching or introducing fragranced products inside the vagina, as these can cause irritation and disturb its natural balance.
If you're experiencing unusual or recurring symptoms, speak with a qualified healthcare professional to understand the cause.
What about Boric Acid?
You may have heard about vaginal boric acid, especially in conversations about recurring vaginal infections.
Vaginal boric acid is sometimes recommended by healthcare professionals for certain diagnosed infections, including selected recurrent cases.
However, boric acid is not a general treatment for discharge or a daily freshness product.
It should only be used when appropriate under professional guidance, should not be used during pregnancy and must never be swallowed.
Your intimate care starts with understanding your body
Not every change is a problem, and not every symptom needs the same treatment.
Understanding what's normal for you makes it easier to recognise when something needs attention.
At Famano Health, we believe women's health conversations should help you make informed decisions about your body and the products you use.
